My Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Diagnosis

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! I am writing you today to share news that is both personal and important to me. Recently, after years of struggling with anxiety, I received a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). GAD is a mental health disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by excessive and persistent worry and anxiety about everyday activities and events, even when there is no apparent reason for concern. I talk about it more here

I am not sharing this personal diagnosis out of pity but because of the critical role that mental health plays in the inclusivity and equity work that we all do. Mental health is often overlooked, even though it has a massive impact on our daily lives, including performance in school, work, and other personal pursuits. In my work, I see the ways that systemic issues and discrimination can cause immense stress, trauma, and anxiety. The work of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion can be emotionally and psychologically taxing.

It's often very difficult to acknowledge and share vulnerabilities associated with our mental health. But in doing so, we can break down the stigma that surrounds mental health and encourage others to seek help without fearing shame or judgment. If we believe that creating spaces of inclusivity and equity is important in our workplaces, universities, and social lives, then providing access to mental health services and support is equally important.

Mental health is a common struggle that touches the lives of many of us across cultures. As we navigate through our various communities promoting inclusivity, equity, and diversity, let us remember that mental health is essential to the wellbeing of all. Let us continue to advocate for making mental health services accessible and breaking down the stigmas surrounding mental health in a world hoping to accept people for who they are wholly and ultimately.
